About Me

I am the author of two novels, The Wrong Story and An Other’s Look, and I am currently writing my third novel, tentatively titled, Fizz. The Wrong Story by James Ellis
I have had a number of short stories and flash fiction published as well as a travelogue of my journey through Central America. I am a Real Writers prizewinner, a Carers UK prizewinner and was highly commended in the British Fantasy Society short story awards. The Wrong Story is available in all reputable bookshops (and, I hope, some disreputable shops too), including these online establishments. I also write for The Gudgeon, Bradford on Avon’s local magazine, and you can read some of my articles here.

The short stories I’ve had published include:

I am very keen on finding and encouraging new voices to join the wonderful world of creative writing, and to that end, I provide structural and developmental editing for fiction writers; creative writing mentoring for unpublished writers; and I develop and facilitate creative writing workshops. Working in partnership with Writing Events my most recent workshops include:

  • Editing & Editors – Roles, Responsibilities & Outcomes
  • Crowdfunding – a New Paradigm in Publishing
  • Novel Writing – Foundations

In the past, I have worked as a technical writer, a user-experience designer, an information consultant and the principal information architect for an internet start-up consultancy. I was in one of the first cohort of writers to develop information using hypertext markup language (HTML) and I have written for most media, including print, online and AV.

For seven years I was the Executive Solution Director for the visa application centres in the Americas, Western Europe, North Africa and the Middle East (including Iraq) for the UK Visa and Immigration agency and the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). I also spent ten years as a Solution Manager and Director working on large to medium complex bids for clients such as BAE, the BBC, the Ministry of Defence and the NHS.

I have a Masters degree from the University of Oxford in Creative Writing and spent my placement reading submissions at an Oxford literary agency. I am a founder member of the Cherwell & Avon Book Group. I am also a member of the Society of Authors, English PEN, the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society, and the International Flann O’Brien Society. And last but definitely not least, I’m very proud to be a member of the Unruly Writers writing group.

You can find out more about what’s been happening to me recently by clicking here, or check out some photographs here.

Elsewhere, I try to keep this blog focused on writerly things but sometimes I stray, and then the posts have nothing to do with writing at all – like when I chipped the end off my elbow or I go on about playing the ukulele… hem. I also write for The Gudgeon, Bradford on Avon’s local magazine. You can read some of my articles here.

In the menu bar I’ve tried to corral my ramblings but if you get lost, just write to me. Even if you don’t get lost, write to me. I don’t get out much. Also, you can find me on twitterlinkedininstagram, goodreads and Facebook.
